It turns out that modern technology plays a role this year in determining at least one of the top five popular costume styles for 2018. Whether you’re in the market for an adult, teen, or child costume, you’ll have fun exploring the options available in each style of this year’s popular collections. Given the popularity of smartphones and social media apps, emoji costumes are at the top of the list, followed by unicorns, Fortnite characters, scary clowns, and the superheroes of Marvel and DC comics.

Make Halloween, trick-or-treating, or your harvest party a fun – and safe – celebration.

  1. Emojis – Use of emojis in text messaging and responding to posts in social media has been a hallmark of online life for a number of years. However, in more recent times, many have come to identify with their own favorite emojis, to the point now that they want to “be” their favorite emoji, even if it’s only for Halloween. Some of the most popular among emoji costumes are Smiling Face with Heart-eyes, Laughing Face with Tears, and Pile of Poo. You may see a few Clown Face emoji masks as well! The good news is that given their simplicity and popularity, they are easy to make at home if store-bought isn’t your style.

  1. Unicorns – Given the popularity of My Little Pony and other animated movies and videos featuring unicorns, it’s no wonder they are one of the top costumes for Halloween in 2018. To add to their already mystical nature, many unicorn costumes now include rainbow colors, stripes, sparkles, or multi-color shimmer fabric. You will still find solid-colored unicorn costumes, as well. Most are for children, but there are adult versions too, including some that are tandem costumes, requiring one person for the front (head and front legs) and a second person for the unicorn’s backside (rear legs and tail).

  1. Fortnite — The range of costumes depicting Fortnite video game characters is truly startling. Those for adults include Brite Bomber, Skull Trooper, Dark Voyager, and Black Knight. Kids’ costume characters include Crackshot, Cuddle Team Leader, and Tricera Ops. A collection of Fortnite themed accessories will help to make your choice of costumes even more authentic and true to their original video game form.

  1. Scary Clowns – While Bozo, Ronald McDonald and Emmett Kelly’s “Weary Willie” clown costumes were popular in the 1970s, today’s clown costumes don’t tend to depict such friendly fools. Scary clowns – made popular by movies such as Stephen King’s “It,” the 2014 film “Clown,” and the classic “Poltergeist” — as well as by the hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse — scary clowns seem to be the norm among today’s Halloween costume choices.

  1. Superheroes (and Villains) – It seems that superheroes – and their nemesis villains – never go out of style around Halloween. This year look for DC superheroes Batman and Wonder Woman to be popular, as well as DC villains Harley Quinn and The Joker (yet another “scary clown”). Marvel superhero costumes popular this year include Thor, Deadpool, Black Panther, and Captain America, based on the recent release of films featuring these characters.
